EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
