Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
