RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several approach shafts providing entry to the facility... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," he commented. "They were among thousands of British troops stationed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. says IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
