They're Repeating across America What They Executed with Christianity

The Trump movement's most telling and characteristic occasions – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of a few weeks, the nation's leader started showing the public his intentions for a lavish reception room double the dimensions compared to the White House and then commenced unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to erect it.

He has committed acts ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of casualties from his cuts to international aid amounts to 600,000 and growing, and recently research forecast his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have attempted – truly, no other president would have conceived – unilaterally destroying large sections of the executive mansion to build a royal-themed celebration hall, with the active collaboration of some of the nation's most affluent, almost all of whom conduct transactions with the government.

We moved from 'the meek shall inherit the world' into 'the gentle will succumb to cholera'

As disorienting as it is to witness the chief executive try to upend the established notion about democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion within America who might not perceive it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics close to half – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.

We have watched throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we learned about into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of affection into a symbol of hostility who blesses specifically the brutality that he criticized in scripture; this transformation occurred more slowly, across decades as opposed to months, however it is still disturbing via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.

A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold

Hence I shall explain the Savior from my upbringing, because theoretically Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and because the quickly increasing segment of Americans could have minimal awareness about him since they are atheists or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; but I do think that there are pearls of substantial value within Christian narrative.

It is decidedly not the account of an authoritative monarch arising; rather, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in a garage, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to evade secret police. The child matures in humble circumstances, an employed craftsman; his doctrine concerns compassion for fellow humans, especially for the disadvantaged – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, shown by providing food and sheltering. The Savior's reaction to violence is to offer the other cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a means to instruct the assailant; his crime policy is that if someone steals your coat you should give the person your additional clothing as well.

The evident and straightforward reality that the Jesus of the gospels advocates for a type of extreme compassion centered on the impoverished has perpetually caused Christianity somewhat of a controversial faith: attractive to the populace, but due to its inherent radicalness requiring to be restrained. In the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – Protestantism was so dominant that it basically baptized the status quo.

A Struggle for the Best Among Us

Hence I have become encouraged to see the persistent defiance to Trump arise in this past year. It has been significant comfort to participate in developing the campaign that has demonstrated publicly through repeated demonstrations, and likely has encouraged electorate to show up in numbers during minor elections. We must have to continue it, and through comparable resolve, featuring US banners throughout each rally and calls to the best parts of American history.

We shall be interrogated ... about how you treated the foreigner? Did you receive him and embrace them or refuse?

America is best defended, in other words, by reference to the best in US heritage, exactly as the Christian faith is best defended by reference to elements that cause it to be special and wonderful, which is the example of Christ. In all circumstances does it mean pretending the worst regarding America and Christianity did not happen; it represents both modesty and conviction, a mixture that committed national faithful should be comfortable with.
